23:27 CET - Two-time defending champions Barcelona have made a dream start to their LaLiga title defence, obliterating Elche 5-0. Raphinha and Fermin Lopez both scored braces, while Karim Adeyemi netted in his first game. Another debutant, Anthony Gordon, also picked up two assists from the bench.

Heartbreaking for the Magpies after they played so well, while the Reds will certainly take a point in Andoni Iraola's first game, especially after being second best for most of the contest.

Meanwhile, Monaco have begun their league season with a 1-0 victory over Le Havre - that first-half strike from Eric Dier the difference between the two sides.

He gets ahead of his marker to flick in a Francisco Conceicao cross to open the scoring.
18:52 CET - Drama in the Spanish capital! Despite being a man down, Atletico Madrid have found a way to level the game, with Giuliano Simeone running in behind before sliding a shot past the Villarreal goalkeeper with four minutes to play.
18:47 CET - Newcastle back in front! They go up the other end, and it's substitute Joe Willock who has put his side 2-1 up, curling an effort past Allison, just one minute after coming off the bench.
Meanwhile, Villarreal have taken the lead at Atletico Madrid, thanks to their second penalty of the game, this time Georges Mikautadze stepping up to dispatch it. Things are going from bad to worse for Atleti, with Robin Le Normand sent off soon after the goal.

Julian Alvarez is also on the pitch for the first time since saying he wanted to go to Barcelona, and the response today from the home faithful has been anything but kind, with loud boos before the game. Can he turn them around on the pitch?
18:28 CET - Atletico Madrid have the lead against Villarreal, thanks to a strike from Marc Pubill. It's a peach of a goal on the hour mark as he curls one into the top corner.
18:19 CET - Half-time at St James' and it's the hosts Newcastle who head into the dressing rooms 1-0 up, thanks to that early goal from Anthony Elanga. Although Liverpool have bossed possession, the Magpies have been the more threatening with their direct attacking football.
