Channel Nine's Danny Weidler first reported on Wednesday evening that Nathan Cleary had knocked back a three-year contract worth $8.4 million, made up of $6 million in playing salary and $2.4 million in third-party offers.
Most notably, the money would have been exempt from income tax as an NRL-driven incentive to attract the league's leading talent to Port Moresby and ensure the new team is competitive from the outset.
According to Weidler, the Panthers will table a two-year deal for Cleary worth $3.4 million over two years.
It became a little clearer just why the older Cleary would turn down such enormous cash when younger brother Jett signed a two-year deal to move to Penrith from New Zealand Warriors.
21-year-old Jett represented Penrith in both the Harold Matthews Cup and SG Ball Cup before an explosive first grade debut for New Zealand Warriors in Round 26, when he was best on ground with three tackle breaks and three try assists as starting halfback.
He played a total of 33 games for the Warriors across all grades, winning a NSW Cup Premiership and State Championship.
Nathan will now likely spend 2027 enjoying a family affair with Jett and father Ivan, who has previously stated he won't seek to renew his contract at the Panthers following the conclusion of the 2027 season.
“We’re excited to have Jett return to the club,” Panthers club GM Elford said on Friday.
“He’s a talented young halfback who came through our pathways, and it’s been pleasing to see him continue his development and earn his NRL debut.
“He returns with valuable experience and a strong connection to Panthers. We look forward to seeing him build on that progress and take the next step in his career here.”
