The big names enter the fray at the Shanghai Masters, with Alexander Zverev, Novak Djokovic and Ben Shelton all beginning their campaigns. Meanwhile, the last two semi-final spots will be decided at the WTA 1000 event in Beijing.

16:25 CET - The action for the day has wrapped up and it is a huge upset! World number 277 Yi Zhou has stunned 24th seed Lorenzo Musetti to the joy of the home supporters after edging a three-set thriller.

The defeat is a big setback for Musetti in his first match since an underwhelming US Open and an embarrassing defeat to someone not even in the top 200 in the world.

That is where we leave you for today, but fear not, we will be back tomorrow for more action from Beijing and Shanghai.

16:05 CET - Fan favourite Alexander Bublik has overcome Czech Tomas Machac 6-4, 7-6(4) in the second round at the Shanghai Masters.

Given a bye in the first round, this was the Kazakh's opening match of the tournament; he will face Brandon Nakashima of the USA in the third round.

15:09 CET - Elise Mertens has completed the semi-final lineup in Beijing, with the Belgian battling through a tense opening set to defeat former champion Iga Swiatek 7-6(0), 6-3.

Having cruised past Coco Gauff in the previous round, Mertens once again delivered an accomplished display against eighth-seeded Swiatek, not facing a single break point across the two sets.

The 30-year-old, who last won a singles title in June 2025, will face home favourite Qinwen Zheng for a spot in Sunday's WTA 1000 final.

13:48 CET - Having claimed his 102nd career title just a few days ago in Beijing, Novak Djokovic is out of the Shanghai Masters after losing his opening match 4-6, 3-6 to big-serving Pole Hubert Hurkacz.

The 29-year-old fired down 13 aces while winning 82% of points behind his first delivery, as Djokovic struggled to continue his momentum from the China Open in an error-strewn display.

12:45 CET - After the impressive performance from Zheng in today's first quarter-final, Iga Swiatek is set to take on Elise Mertens in around 15 minutes.

Swiatek is the favourite and will fancy her chances but the pressure is also on after the Pole's underwhelming end to the season.

Mertens won't be a pushover either after stunning Coco Gauff in straight sets in the previous round and playing some high-quality tennis so far in Beijing.

12:35 CET - The results keep coming in at the Shanghai Masters as 13th seed Jakub Mensik has cruised past Miomir Kecmanovic in just over an hour, whilst 25th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has beaten Jenson Brooksby.

11:23 CET - Qinwen Zheng is through to the semi-finals at her home tournament in Beijing after a commanding straight-sets victory against Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals!

It was the first big match she had played on the WTA tour since losing to world number one Elena Rybakina in the US Open quarter-finals and the in-form Zheng passed it with flying colours.

As for world number seven Svitolina, this is another setback in what is proving to be a mixed end to her 2026 season.

10:35 CET - World number 10 Frances Tiafoe has joined fellow American Ben Shelton in the next round of Shanghai after a convincing 6-4, 6-4 win against Yannick Hanfmann.

Tiafoe is another player who got off to a poor start to the Asian Swing after losing his second match in Tokyo, but the US Open semi-finalists will fancy a deep run in Shanghai and winning in just over an hour and 15 minutes is a good way to start.

10:07 CET - US Open champion and top seed in Shanghai, Alexander Zverev, has come through his first match at the 2026 Shanghai Masters against home player Yibing Wu.

It will have felt like an important win in a big tournament for the world number two to get back on track after being stunned by Novak Djokovic in Beijing.

09:50 CET - Brandon Nakashima has bounced back from a poor start to his Asian Swing with a hard-fought straight-sets victory in Shanghai against the big-serving Matteo Berrettini.

09:30 CET - Qinwen Zheng vs Elina Svitolina is underway in the opening WTA Beijing 1000 semi-final and it promises to be a fascinating battle between the home favourite and world number seven.

08:45 CET - The upsets keep on coming this morning, though, as sixth seed Flavio Cobolli has just lost an epic three-set battle against France's veteran Adrian Mannarino.

It is a result that comes somewhat out of the blue, as Mannarino has struggled for wins during the Asian Swing so far, but then again, so has Cobolli.

The Italian had a poor US Open, lost his only Laver Cup match and has yet to win in Asia, so it is back to the drawing board for Cobolli.

08:30 CET - US Open finalist and birthday boy Ben Shelton has avoided any first-round drama after starting his Shanghai campaign with a routine 6-3, 7-6 win against Daniel Altmaier in just under two hours.

07:45 CET - Good morning, and welcome back to our coverage of the Shanghai Masters and the WTA 1000 event in Beijing, with a host of big names set to take the court in China today.

Several of the world's best players will get their Shanghai campaigns underway this morning, including recent Beijing champion and four-time champion Novak Djokovic, soon-to-be world number one Alexander Zverev, Alexander Bublik, and Jakub Mensik.

Two players eyeing ATP Finals qualification, Flavio Cobolli and Ben Shelton are on court in second-set action. Meanwhile, 23rd seed and big favourite Andrey Rublev was stunned early on this morning in the first match of the day, losing in straight sets to Japan's Rei Sakamoto.

Over in Beijing, the final two semi-final spots are up for grabs, beginning with a clash between home favourite Qinwen Zheng and Elina Svitolina at 09:00 CET.

The Ukrainian has enjoyed a superb 2026, and this is her fifth quarter-final at 1000 level. Meanwhile, Zheng has been in great form since the US Open, showing signs that the former world number four is returning to her best after a serious elbow injury.

At midday, 2023 champion Iga Swiatek goes head-to-head with Elise Mertens. The Pole is currently ranked 10th in the Race to the WTA Finals, so she will need a good few weeks to qualify for the tournament for an eighth straight year.

The pair have played each other twice, with Swiatek winning comfortably on both occasions.
